Dance of the "Llauradors"

Fri, Aug 14 · 10:30 PM

Dance of the "Llauradors"

Its history dates back to the beginning of our Moors and Christians festivals, suffering a long hiatus that extended from the turbulent days of the start of the civil war until 1991 when it was rescued by the Llauradors troupe, and since 2008 it has been celebrated on the Friday before the Semana Grande of our festivals.

The dance consists of seven distinctive musical pieces: a polka, two jotas, a waltz, an andante, a Valenciana, and a final galop. Each of these pieces embodies the rich cultural heritage and festive spirit of the Valencian people, attracting large crowds with its charm and grace.

The dance route begins in Plaza de Baix, at the doors of the Sociedad de Festeros del Santisimo Cristo de la Agonía (Society of Festeros of the Most Holy Christ of Agony), where the dancers, all members of the Comparsa de Llauradors (Llauradors Group), begin their performance. They then advance along Calle de la Trinidad to Plaza de San Roque, where they continue their dance, then head to Plaza del Mayor and repeat the dances in front of the imposing castle located on the façade of the old town hall. The itinerary culminates in Placeta Latonda, where the dancers perform their final movements, thus marking the close of the traditional dance of the "Llauradors."

Morning with our elders

On the Saturday before the Semana Grande of our festivities, the Charges, First trons, Governing Board, all dressed in the daily attire of their respective comparsas, together with the Municipal Corporation embark on a significant journey to the century-old institution of the Santo Hospital Beneficencia, the La Saleta residence and the San Francisco Residence, three shelters steeped in history, affection and humanity. In a gesture of deep respect and closeness they carry with them the essence of the festival to share with the residents and their loved ones the emotion and joy that characterize our Moors and Christians. In each of these venerable institutions, the passage of visitors becomes a haven of happiness, where smiles multiply to the rhythm of the emblematic Moorish and Christian marches, thus symbolizing the union and diversity that define the spirit of Ontinyent.

The atmosphere in each of them is imbued with a unique atmosphere, where tradition and affection intertwine in a comforting embrace. Shared memories and intertwined stories weave a blanket of complicity and warmth, reminding us of the importance of family and community ties in our lives. Between the walls impregnated with experiences and learning, the immortal verses of Cervino resonate, like an echo of eternity that joins the vivacity of the present.

In each gesture of affection and in each word of encouragement, deep respect and gratitude is expressed towards those who, with their dedication and their example, have left an indelible mark in the heart of Ontinyent. This emotional and significant meeting reminds us of the importance of valuing and honoring the memory of our elders, as well as cultivating the sense of community and solidarity that unites us as citizens.

Mass in suffrage for the deceased Festeros

In the serene atmosphere of the Hermitage of Santa Ana, an act of profound meaning takes place every year: the Mass in suffrage of the deceased festival-goers. When the sun begins to tint the horizon with its golden tones, the echo of the carcasses resonate in the air, announcing to the population the beginning of this emotional meeting.

On the esplanade of Santa Ana at the doors of the hermitage and under the watchful eye of our Morenet, the Most Holy Christ of the Agony, are the Captains, Ambassadors, Ambassadors and First Trons, the Governing Board of the Society and the Municipal Corporation, as well as a large number of faithful to attend the celebration of the holy mass, all united in prayer and memory.

The act takes place with solemnity, marked by the soft notes of sacred music and the comforting words of the parish priest of the Royal Parish of San Carlos Borromeo and religious advisor of the Society. In this mass, prayers are said in honor of all the festival-goers who, although physically absent, remain alive in the collective memory of the entire community. It is a moment of reflection, homage and gratitude towards all those who contributed with their joy and dedication to enrich our Moors and Christians festivals.

The Mass in suffrage of the deceased festival-goers is more than a religious act, it is a tribute full of emotion and respect towards those who were a fundamental part of the history of our festivals. In this space of recollection, the community unites in a gesture of love and recognition, keeping the flame of their memory alive in each prayer and in each heart that beats to the rhythm of the celebration.

Essay on Embassies and Smuggling

The official rehearsal of the embassies is a crucial moment in the preparations for the Moors and Christians festival in Ontinyent. Throughout the year, the ambassadors dedicate countless hours to perfecting their diction, the power of their words, their gestures, their movements, and so on, in rehearsals held without an audience. However, the day of the embassy rehearsal marks a significant milestone: it is the first event where spectators have the opportunity to witness the results of the participants' efforts and dedication.

Until 2022, this important rehearsal took place on the esplanade of the Hermitage of Santa Ana, where the ambassadors met to fine-tune every detail of their performances. However, in 2023, the decision was made to move the rehearsal to the Plaza de Baix, creating an even more vibrant and festive atmosphere, attracting a large audience eager to witness this unique spectacle. For the ambassadors, this rehearsal with an audience represents the culmination of months of hard work and anticipation.

For Ontinyent, the embassy rehearsal is an exciting event. It's a time to celebrate tradition and culture, while enjoying the ambassadors' impressive performances before a dedicated and enthusiastic audience.

Mass in honor of the Patron Saint

Mass in honor of the Patron Saint

Crowning the small hill from where our beloved city can be seen, stands the Hermitage of Santa Ana. It is here, under the sky that embraces our desires and the whispers of the wind that surrounds us, where the Most Holy Christ of the Agony dwells eternally, radiating its light on our lives and our Moors and Christians festivals.

On the wide esplanade of the Hermitage of Santa Ana, our most solemn meeting takes place, the mass in honor of our patron saint. It is a moment of reverence and devotion towards the one who guides our steps in each celebration. Under the sky that still retains the freshness of the morning and the aroma of wet earth and pine resin that permeates the air, we stop in silence. It is in this moment of calm where we close our eyes and raise our prayers seeking his blessing.
