Contrabandistas

A bit of history...

Founded in 1861, the second year of our festivals.

They wear the typical attire of the Serranía de Ronda that made the horsemen bandits of that place famous. The Smugglers greatly improved those clothes with the addition of exquisite embroidery in gold thread and glitter, as well as the woollen tassels on the blanket and leggings.

It is a garment made of black velvet and consists of a jacket richly embroidered on the sleeves and shoulders, a coloured inner vest, a knee-length saragüell also embroidered and with lace. A belt at the waist and leather leggings or boots; a white shirt and a red bow or tie. On the shoulder they wear a Jerez blanket and a handkerchief on their head which is covered with the montera.

Women wear a variation of this costume consisting of a jacket, skirt-trousers and Calañas hat, and since 2015 women have been allowed to embroider freely.

On the Saturday of the festivities, just before the Smuggling event that they star in with the Sailors, they offer the “Ball dels Contrabandistes” in the Plaza de la Concepción
